READING NOTEBOOK EXPECTATIONS
READING RESPONSES
At least three reading entries (responses) per day
Responses done in class, unless told otherwise
Date ALL entries
Include the question stem at the top (stems can be found in your reader’s notebooks
NOTES
You should write a notes during every mini lesson.
If you copy a note due to an absence, it must be complete.
Notes are also posted in Evernote and can be printed out and placed in notebooks.
POST-ITS
Multiple post-its (sticky notes) are required daily.  My students will also write notes directly in their journals.  On the post-its, or directly in their notebooks, students record predictions, questions, etc. These assist students in writing responses otherwise known as “writing long”.
HOW MANY BOOKS SHOULD I BE READING?
Just right books, in novel format, should take about one-two weeks to read, comprehend, and respond.  If you are racing through books…ask yourself if you are really understanding what is going on in the book.
Reading Response Example #1
Date: ______       The Turtle by Jim Bishop

“…Denis loved the twenty-five cent turtle more than the Erector sets, the book of games, the orange scooter, or the baseball mitt.

pg. 42
When I read the story “The Turtle,” I felt a connection to my own experience with turtles.  Just like the boy in the story, I had a pet turtle when I was younger.  The boy really loved his turtle, and I loved mine, too.  It is hard to believe now, but my turtles had pretty pink roses painted on their shells.  Now we know that is not a good thing to do to turtles!  My turtle would sit in his plastic bowl with the fake palm tree, and he (or she?) would watch the world go by. Occasionally we would feed our turtles a bit of hamburger or, if they were lucky, a fly that happened to get too close to our swatter!  We also spent a year with a large turtle we found in Lake Michigan.  These experiences help me understand how the boy felt in the story when he thought his turtle was dead.  I sure am glad there are people in the world who love turtles!
